About Madeira Madeira is a Portuguese island just off the coast of Africa. It has a subtropical climate and an extensive irrigation system, making the island an ecological paradise. The centre of the island has spectacular mountains, with high peaks and extensive plateaus, making it extremely popular with walkers. The surrounding sea moderates the temperature giving the island a spring like climate for most of the year. Throughout the year there are many festivals and carnivals including a spectacular flower festival, which should not be missed. The people of the island are extremely friendly and crime is very low, making it one of the safest destinations for tourists. The official language is Portuguese, but English is widely spoken, so that communication is rarely a problem. |
About Funchal Funchal is the capital of Madeira and is the preferred destination for most tourists. It is a modern westernised city, with many restaurants, coffee bars and art galleries. There are many beautifully kept parks with colourful flowers in abundance. There is a cable car, which will take you to one of the higher points around Funchal, from which most of the southern part of the island can be seen. There is a balloon that will sweep you aloft and a helicopter that will fly you over the island. Pleasure boats leave from Funchal Harbour on a regular basis, with Whale and Dolphin watching being extremely popular. There are many public swimming pools including the well-known Lido center (see the picture gallery). |
There are flights to Madeira from most British airports. We have
found that the following airlines are the most economical. easyjet EasyJet is particularly cheap if you fly from Bristol airport and sometimes as low as £70 return. British Airways is particularly good from Gatwick airport and the
flights can be as low as £100 return. |
